Middleton Cheney Primary School Philosophy Group

Philosopher's Island

Teacher's Page

Philosopher's Island is a series of problems designed to encourage children to address philosophical issues. The scheme aims to cover topics such as theories of knowledge,  ethics, aesthetics etc. It has been used with children aged 7-11.

Middleton Cheney Primary School philosophy club was set up as a forum for discussion. We wanted to provide the opportunity for children who wanted to explore and discuss more abstract issues.

The children were set the problems and discussed these in small groups. They then fed back their findings to the other groups and these were discussed.
After each discussion I summarised the main points and these have been included on the site.

Each section looks at a different aspect of philosophy.

Section 1 explores how we acquire knowledge,

Section 2 discusses absolute values,

Section 3 explores political philosophy

Section 4 explores artificial intelligence and thought .

a section on aesthetics is being designed

In discussions we discussed the ideas of philosophers such as Plato, Aristotle Zeno the Elisian Diogenese  the Cynics, Utilitarianism, Hobbes, Marx.etc. However the problems can be explored without any  previous philosophical knowledge.

In the discussions I have been amazed by the depth of thinking and understanding shown by the children.

We would be love to hear from other philosophy clubs. We would like to hear if you agree with our observations or if you come up with any other solutions.

We would also like to hear if you have got any other problems for us to discuss. We can be contacted at  pmpercival@portables2.ngfl.gov.uk
